Placement Exam Strategies
Why Placement Exams Matter?
Placement exams determine your starting level in core subjects like Ear Training, Harmony (Music Application & Theory), Writing Skills, and Music Technology. Score high enough and you can test out of introductory classes, making room for advanced courses or even shortening your degree timeline.
Core Preparation Tactics
- Study from the first-year course syllabi — the placement exams reflect those learning outcomes.
- Train under realistic conditions: limited audio replays, timed responses, minimal pauses.
- Focus practice on weak areas, not your strengths.
- Use led recordings, notation drills, and dictation tools daily.
- Include full-length mock exams once a week to build stamina.
Strategies for Each Component
Ear Training
- Practice melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic dictation using solfège (Berklee’s ear training curriculum uses these techniques)
- Focus on common keys and familiar tonal material (inferred from common pedagogy)
- Use moveable-do solfège and conducting methods (aligned with Berklee’s Ear Training approach)
Harmony
- Work daily on chord progressions, inversions, and voice-leading
- Analyze short harmonic progressions to internalize functional harmony
Writing Skills
- Practice short-score notation and arranging melodies with chords
- Keep notation clean, readable, and structurally clear (best-practice)
Music Technology
- Learn audio fundamentals (signal flow, DAW basics, routing) – foundational to MTEC courses
- Know that the test is a one-time 50-question, 50-minute exam
How Liz Helps You Turn ESPA Scores Into Real Savings
Doing well on Berklee’s placement exams is about testing out of required classes that most students spend months (and thousands of dollars) completing. High marks on your ESPAs can place you directly into advanced courses, helping you:
- Save up to a full year of tuition and living expenses by earning credit through exams instead of coursework.
- Free up time to focus on what actually matters to you: your craft, collaborations, and performance opportunities.
- Graduate faster without sacrificing any part of your Berklee experience.
Liz’s coaching bridges the gap between where you are and what Berklee expects. She helps you study the exact topics covered in the ESPAs – from melodic dictation and harmony to notation and music tech fundamentals – so you walk into the assessments with confidence, not guesswork.
With her guidance, you’ll understand not just what to study, but how Berklee evaluates your readiness. Every session focuses on building the specific skills and listening awareness that directly translate into higher placement scores and real financial savings once you start your program.
